Our Score
This adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy of star-crossed lovers tends to be forgotten in the shuffle between George Cukor's all-star 1930s version, Franco Zeffirelli's exquisite 1968 film and Baz Luhrmann's exciting modern take. But, Renato Castellani's classically elegant production, beautifully shot on location in Italy with jewel-bright design inspired by Renaissance paintings, did win the Golden Lion at the Venice film festival and boasts attractive, textbook performances. Most memorable is Laurence Harvey's soulful, poetic Romeo, but unknown Susan Shentall also acquits herself well as a gentle, dreamy Juliet and grande dame Flora Robson is delicious as her loquacious nurse. John Gielgud provides the narration.

The children of two feuding clans fall in love at first sight and marry in secret. However, the conflict between their families continues unabated, with devastating consequences for the lovers. Adaptation of Shakespeare's romantic tragedy, starring Susan Shentall and Laurence Harvey.
