Review

Our Score
This was to have starred romantic tenor Mario Lanza as the prince who falls for a barmaid, only Lanza grew too obese to wear the period costumes, economically handed over from MGM's The Prisoner of Zenda remake. While his voice remains on the rousing soundtrack, he was replaced in the film by stiff Brit Edmund Purdom, who in the same year had also replaced a difficult Marlon Brando in The Egyptian, but whose star was to fall as quickly as it rose. The film sounds magnificent, looks sumptuous and the plot about the duties of royalty has resonances today.

Summary

A pompous prince must choose between romance and duty when he falls in love with a barmaid on a trip to Heidelberg. Musical based on Romberg's operetta, starring Edmund Purdom, Ann Blyth, Louis Calhern and John Ericson.
