3 out of 5
For all its crudity and violence, this edgy slice-of-life tale remains compulsively addictive. Part grimy ensemble drama, part bruise-black comedy, it follows a group of interlinking characters doing whatever it takes to stay buoyant in a crime-ridden area of Dublin. At the centre of events is John (28 Days Later ...star Cillian Murphy), a supermarket shelf-stacker who plots revenge after ex-girlfriend Deirdre (Kelly Macdonald) shacks up with a middle-aged bank manager. While the protagonists aren't likeable, they're certainly absorbing, from a moustached Shirley Henderson to Colin Farrell's trigger-happy rogue. But be warned, their nasty, foul-mouthed antics won't be to everyone's taste, even though it's the strong humour that ultimately leaves the deepest impression.
