Third Time Lucky

Third Time Lucky

Gordon Parry (1949)

Our Score
What a difference it would have made had this routine British drama been produced in Hollywood. The tale of a gambler who doesn't realise that he loves his lucky mascot until the chips are down would have been perfect pulp material for the likes of Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake. But, for all their efforts, Dermot Walsh and Glynis Johns just don't set the screen alight. Similarly, Gordon Parry (in fairness, directing only his second feature) fails to capture the seedy world of gambling dens and backstreet drinking joints. The corny, moralising ending, however, is pure Hollywood.
