Our Score
A year after Miranda and long before Splash, this gentle and now-forgotten romantic comedy was the first mermaid movie to make postwar movie censors tremble. Not that there is much to worry about, since lovely Ann Blyth is a most provocative, but totally covered-up, former denizen of the deep. William Powell catches her while fishing, and his urbanity makes this Nunnally Johnson-scripted tosh acceptable, though it would have benefited from a stronger director than Irving Pichel. The film became a great favourite with American teenagers and featured in several comic books of its day, continuing the tale in cartoon-strip form through to the mid-1950s.
