What a difference a decade makes in this second sequel (discounting series spin-off The Scorpion King) to Stephen Sommers's 1999 hit. The story opens in ancient China as ruthless Emperor Han (Jet Li) is crushing all before him in a bid to control the region. But his desire for immortality is his undoing. The action then flashes forward to the 1940s and the discovery of his tomb. Star Brendan Fraser is back as adventurer Rick O'Connell but much of the vigour of his original performance is gone, as he and wife Evelyn (Maria Bello, replacing Rachel Weisz) get drawn into a plot to resurrect the emperor and restore him to power. The poor dialogue and dreadful acting - Bello's wayward English accent, Fraser's cringeworthy tête-à-tête with son Luke Ford - are forgivable in an action movie. But the much-anticipated fight between Li and Michelle Yeoh's sorceress is ridiculously brief, the action is badly choreographed and John Hannah's comedy sidekick is simply an embarrassment. There's an entertaining battle between the emperor's forces and a zombie army, but it's too little too late.

Plot Summary

Period horror adventure starring Brendan Fraser and Jet Li. Intrepid explorers Rick and Evelyn O'Connell come out of retirement to join their archaeologist son Alex in a race to prevent the resurrected Dragon Emperor and his terracotta army from taking over the world.
