Thunder over the Plains

Thunder over the Plains

Andre De Toth (1953)

Our Score
It's Texas just after the Civil War, as the state comes under the exploitative influence of northern carpetbaggers. Randolph Scott is the native Texan who, as a captain in the Union army of occupation, has the tricky job of enforcing law and order despite his sympathy for Charles McGraw's defiant band of vigilantes. A contrast in villainy is offered by Elisha Cook Jr's corrupt tax assessor and Lex Barker's West Point captain, who lusts after Scott's wife (Phyllis Kirk) while he's away. Andre De Toth's direction keeps the complicated story on the move but he can't create any real tension.

An officer in the Union army occupying post-Civil War Texas is charged with enforcing law over his own people. Setting out in pursuit of a gang of vigilantes, he begins to sympathise with their plight and when the leader is arrested on a trumped-up murder charge, he tries to prove his innocence, becoming a wanted man in the process. Western, starring Randolph Scott, Lex Barker, Phyllis Kirk and Elisha Cook Jr.
