Our Score
A movie directed by Alan Alda always means a touch of Woody Allen meets vaudeville, and that's the case with this tale of a group of eccentric New Yorkers all trying to get Betsy married off to their own agendas. Molly Ringwald is neatly understated as Betsy, who wishes to make an honest man of a nice boy who is neither frantically Jewish like Ringwald's mom (an excellent Madeline Kahn) nor makes breakfast seem like a scene from Tosca as does her Italian dad (Alda at his best). The cast is faultless, right down to the minor roles, but then Alda has a strong reputation as a luvvie's director.

A fashion student's dreams of a small intimate wedding reception are spoiled when her father, intimidated by his future son-in-law's wealthy family, plans to turn the impending nuptials into a major Italian-Jewish celebration. Comedy, written, directed by and starring Alan Alda, with Molly Ringwald, Joe Pesci, Anthony LaPaglia, Ally Sheedy and Madeline Kahn.
