Marine Raiders

Marine Raiders

Harold Schuster (1944)

Our Score
This Second World War adventure salutes the marines who trained and then fought for the island of Guadalcanal in the South Pacific. Filmed in pseudo-documentary style, it takes a handful of marines, led by blokeish Pat O'Brien, and plonks them down in California for basic training before showing how they fare in battle. Australia serves as a halfway house, where there's time for romance and wedding bells for Robert Ryan and Ruth Hussey. Guadalcanal was also the setting for both film versions of The Thin Red Line.

American recruits are put through a tough Marine training course in preparation for combat action, but a brief stopover in Australia leads to a whirlwind romance - and tragedy. Second World War adventure, starring Robert Ryan, Pat O'Brien, Ruth Hussey and Frank McHugh.
