Our Score
This splendid early Errol Flynn vehicle bears little relation to historical fact, but who cares? It's a wonderful swashbuckler, set largely in India, but fetching up in the Crimea in time for a stunningly spectacular charge, punctuated by on-screen quotes from Tennyson. The great Michael Curtiz, who would later team up with Flynn in their masterpiece The Adventures of Robin Hood, directs, with Olivia de Havilland returning as Flynn's love interest a year after their screen partnership began with Captain Blood. The magnificent score was Max Steiner's first for Warner Bros (he hadn't composed its shield trademark yet) and it provides the perfect accompaniment to this thunderingly good movie.

A British major and his brother stationed in India during the Crimean War become rivals when they fall in love with the same woman. An allied local ruler betrays the British, carrying out a massacre of civilians and prompting the major to swear revenge on him - ultimately leading a suicidal attack on an enemy artillery position. Fact-based drama, starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and Nigel Bruce.
