Will Ferrell mocks the conventions of spaghetti westerns and daytime Mexican soap operas in this intermittently funny saga about a family of south-of-the-border ranchers under threat from a vicious criminal. Humble and unfavoured son Armando (Ferrell), forever in the shadow of his successful and better-looking brother Raul (Diego Luna), must fight to save the family home when Raul's shady business dealings bring him into conflict with drugs baron Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal). At the same time, he sets out to woo his brother's beautiful bride-to-be (Genesis Rodriguez). While the film has the feel of an extended comedy sketch (both director Matt Piedmont and writer Andrew Steele are Saturday Night Live alumni), Ferrell's straight-faced portrayal and impeccable comic timing keep things lively. Performing the entire film in Spanish is a bold move that some may find frustrating, but there are plenty of winks to the audience about clichéd low-budget melodramas to keep us in on the joke.
