Despite the title's promise of another bloody showdown, there's not much Aliens vs Predator in this confusing and tension-free addition to the dual monster franchise. Following on from 2004's AVP: Alien vs Predator, a spaceship carrying a hybrid "Predalien" and several face-huggers crashes near a small Colorado town and a battle-weary veteran Predator is dispatched to deal with the mayhem. The stereotypical human characters include Steven Pasquale (Rescue Me) as an ex-con and Reiko Aylesworth (24) as the requisite ass-kicking mother in peril. Co-directors Colin and Greg Strause are renowned for their visual effects work on films like 300 and 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. But everything here feels overdone - from the Aliens going through their familiar chest-bursting life cycle, to the Predator continually using subjective thermal vision. Apart from some cool detailing (the creepy maternity ward sequence) and a few in-jokes, this unscary trudge through the sci-fi horror conventions has all been done before and far better.
