The Woman on the Beach

The Woman on the Beach

Jean Renoir (1947)

A Certificate

Our Score
Jean Renoir regarded his seven-year sojourn in America as wasted time. Yet, in spite of the harmful cuts ordered by studio bosses at RKO, there is no denying the quality of his parting shot to Hollywood. Joan Bennett, in the title role, reinforced the reputation she forged in such Fritz Lang features as The Woman in the Window and Scarlet Street as one of film noir's finest femmes fatales. By focusing on her highly charged interaction with blind husband Charles Bickford and shell-shocked lifeguard Robert Ryan, Renoir produced a smouldering melodrama that never relaxes its grip.

A US Coast Guard officer suffering recurring nightmares involving a maritime tragedy becomes entangled with a beautiful woman who is married to a blind painter. Drama, starring Joan Bennett and Robert Ryan.
