Martin Lawrence provides the only real surprise in this by-the-numbers family comedy. Delivering an uncharacteristically restrained performance, he stars as a disgraced college basketball coach who attempts to restore his reputation by training a team of losers at his old junior high school. Slapstick and sight gags dominate, as the stereotypical misfits demonstrate their on-court liabilities, while playful visuals add to the initially knockabout atmosphere. Naturally, social zeros soon transform into heroes, but this cosy turnaround can't disguise the weak and rushed plotting. Without a build-up of anticipation, the characters' triumphs appear rather hollow, a fact exacerbated by the flat climax.
Plot Summary
Comedy starring Martin Lawrence as motormouth basketball coach Roy McCormick, who finds himself suspended after a tragic altercation with an opposing team's mascot. Out on a limb and with his reputation in tatters, Roy seeks redemption by taking a job training a bunch of high-school misfits.
