Darby's Rangers

Darby's Rangers

William A Wellman (1958)

Our Score
This overlong, routine and dreary-looking drama follows American commandos in front-line action in North Africa and Italy during the Second World War. Charlton Heston signed up for the lead, but Jack L Warner apparently reneged on the deal. Veteran director William A Wellman had to settle for young TV stars James Garner and Edward Byrnes and European newcomer Etchika Choureau, who struggle to make an impression. Jack Warden has the most authority as the master sergeant, while Stuart Whitman stands out among the newcomers.

A seasoned combat hero puts together and trains an elite team of American commandos for special action behind enemy lines in Italy and North Africa. Second World War adventure based on James J Altieri's autobiographical book The Spearheaders, starring James Garner, Etchika Choureau, Jack Warden and Edd Byrnes.
