This glossy remake of Delmer Daves's low-key 1957 western is powered along by two enthralling star turns. Christian Bale is engagingly understated as hard-up rancher Dan Evans, who boldly offers to escort a dangerous prisoner to the local train station. It's difficult to take your eyes off him, except to try and figure out what's going on in the mind of Ben Wade (Russell Crowe), the passenger booked on a trip to the jailhouse. Athough the backstory takes a while to unfold, director James Mangold (Walk the Line) pulls no punches (or shootings or stabbings) when it comes to showing Wade's dark side. A bond begins to grow between the outlaw and the family man, and the tension mounts as Wade's gang slowly closes in. Despite getting a little too theatrical in the final showdown, Mangold's film remains an exciting and emotional ride.
