Review

Our Score
Beautifully designed in a pre-Raphaelite sort of way by Sophie Becher and with rich autumnal photography by Clive Tickner, this is an undeniably handsome version of Shakespeare's cruellest comedy. Yet, considering Trevor Nunn spent so long with the Royal Shakespeare Company, he brings surprisingly little to the play. The film skirts around virtually all of the social and sexual themes raised by the various misunderstandings and alliances that follow the storm-tossed arrival of Imogen Stubbs and brother Steven Mackintosh on the shores of Illyria. Notwithstanding the conservative direction, the performances, particularly of Helena Bonham Carter, Nigel Hawthorne and Richard E Grant, are highly polished.

Summary

Shipwreck survivor Viola falls for the dashing Duke Orsino while posing as a manservant in his court. However, an unlikely love triangle develops when she is asked to act as go-between in her master's efforts to woo disinterested noblewoman Olivia. Shakespeare's comedy of errors, starring Imogen Stubbs, Helena Bonham Carter, Nigel Hawthorne, Ben Kingsley, Mel Smith, Imelda Staunton, Toby Stephens and Steven Mackintosh.
