Runaway Bride

Runaway Bride

Garry Marshall (1999)

PG Certificate

Our Score
Julia Roberts, Richard Gere and their Pretty Woman director Garry Marshall were reunited for this predictable but well-played romantic comedy. Roberts stars as the small-town girl who has left three heartbroken men at the altar, and Gere plays the cynical columnist who's keen to see if she will actually tie the knot on her fourth attempt. Of course, you'll have worked out the ending before you reach the last line of this review. However, thanks to Roberts's deft comedic touch, a zippy script and some nice support from Marshall stalwart Hector Elizondo and the always reliable Joan Cusack, this is a sweet romance that will warm the cockles of wedding fanatics everywhere. Marriage phobics, however, should steer clear - they may well be converted.

A disreputable journalist hopes to get his ailing career back on track by writing an article about a commitment-shy woman famed for ditching bridegrooms at the altar - but complications arise when the pair meet on the eve of her latest attempt at marriage. Romantic comedy, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, with Joan Cusack, Hector Elizondo and Rita Wilson. Edited for language.
