This intense, highly charged account of power, passion, rivalry and revenge has much in common with Greek tragedy and is full of far-from-subtle Freudian elements. (Watch how Walter Huston and Barbara Stanwyck, as a father and daughter perpetually at odds, ease their faces closer until it seems they are about to kiss.) Expertly written by Charles Schnee and brilliantly directed by Anthony Mann, the film is powerfully performed by Stanwyck, Huston (who died shortly after filming) and Judith Anderson. Franz Waxman's rousing score and Victor Milner's Oscar-nominated photography add to the pleasures of an overwrought but totally compelling piece.
