Get Smart

Our Score
Clueless spy Maxwell Smart started life in the long-running 1960s TV series, which spoofed the James Bond movies, before making a less successful return in the 1980s and 90s. Here Steve Carell takes over the role made famous by Don Adams, working as an analyst for spy agency CONTROL. Gorgeous Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) remains by his side as usual, as our hapless hero travels to Russia to foil the plans of a ruthless bomb manufacturer (Terence Stamp). While many of the popular TV catchphrases and ludicrous gadgets (the Cone of Silence, the Shoe Phone) are included here, they can't rescue this crass update. Totally lacking the clever zaniness of the deadpan original, director Peter Segal's film opts for grand scale and vulgar slapstick instead, upping the action quota to compensate for the stale gags about gizmos, girls and guns.

Clumsy Maxwell Smart's dream to leave his desk job at a secret intelligence agency and become a fully-fledged spy comes true when the identities of all the agents are exposed. Maxwell's boss has no choice but to send him into action to battle a sinister terrorist organisation. Comedy, based on the 1960s TV series, with Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terence Stamp and James Caan.
