Second Chance

Second Chance

Rudolph Maté (1953)

Our Score
Originally shown in 3D, this action melodrama relies on the potency of its star power, as laconic boxer Robert Mitchum falls for lovely gangster's moll Linda Darnell, who is on the run from killer Jack Palance. Director Rudolph Maté keeps this nonsense moving along, and the Mexican scenery is certainly striking. The cast contains some well-known character faces, in particular Dan Seymour, who earlier in his career featured in such classics as Casablanca, To Have and Have Not and Key Largo. This is very much a product of RKO under its new boss Howard Hughes, featuring good-looking stars in exotic locations. Big Mitch was getting used to walking through these flicks, but, then, he did have plenty of charisma to spare.

A former boxer goes to South America to put a tragedy in the ring behind him. He falls for a gangster's moll who is also fleeing her past, and vows to protect her when a Mob enforcer is sent to kill her before she can reveal what she knows. However, the hitman offers to spare her if she will run away with him. Thriller, starring Robert Mitchum, Linda Darnell and Jack Palance.
