Robert De Niro returns to the traumas of Vietnam in this talky yet engrossing drama. He plays an ex-serviceman who has finally come to terms with the conflict, setting out to help an old friend (Ed Harris), who is still deeply disturbed by his experiences of the war. Apart from a few, not entirely convincing wartime flashbacks, director David Jones concentrates on the interplay between De Niro and Harris, and they both make the most of Stephen Metcalfe's perceptive script. The strong supporting cast includes Kathy Baker and Charles Dutton. Not in the same league as The Deer Hunter, but a modest, rewarding experience, nevertheless.
