Having already teamed Stephen Mangan with Keira Knightley in his award-winning short New Year's Eve, former BBC TV director Col Spector co-wrote this unconventional romantic comedy with Green Wing star Mangan in mind. It's certainly a tailor-made role, with Mangan adeptly switching between cynicism, flirtatiousness and self-pity as London-based portrait photographer David, who breaks up with long-time girlfriend Lisa (Susan Lynch) after confessing to a crush on kooky stranger Nina (Lara Belmont). Spector's decision to shoot mostly in medium and long shots means that Mangan is never allowed to dominate proceedings - his byplay with Lynch, Belmont and loser buddy Christopher Coghill is always quirkily even-handed. Running a meagre 77 minutes, this is a very bourgeois, very British kind of comedy, but its wit and restraint give it a pleasing authenticity.
