The Diary of Anne Frank

The Diary of Anne Frank

Boris Sagal (1980)

Our Score
In 1959, George Stevens's adaptation of Anne Frank's celebrated diary drew eight Oscar nominations, with Shelley Winters winning a statuette for best supporting actress. Doris Roberts steps into her shoes for this TV-movie remake and turns in a creditable performance, as does Melissa Gilbert in the title role previously played by Millie Perkins. Director Boris Sagal sensibly retained the services of Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, who wrote the prize-winning Broadway version of the tale, but the young cast still needed to be handled with considerable care and he was fortunate in having experienced veterans such as Maximilian Schell and Joan Plowright on hand to coax them along.

Fact-based drama based on the famous journal of a Jewish youngster forced to hide with her family from occupying Nazis in an Amsterdam attic for two years. Starring Melissa Gilbert, Maximilian Schell and Joan Plowright.
