Our Score
Love and laughter are all-important in this romantic comedy set in London just prior to the Second World War. Frances McDormand stars as the engagingly prim and proper Miss Pettigrew, an impoverished governess who soon finds herself employed as "social secretary" to flighty American starlet Delysia Lafosse. Amy Adams (Enchanted) channels the spirit of Jean Harlow (squeaky voice and all) as Delysia, who juggles the affections of three men - including Lee Pace (from TV's Pushing Daisies) - and generally drives Miss Pettigrew around the bend. While trying to show Delysia the error of her ways, Pettigrew is forced to reassess her own love life and indulges in a flirtation with a world-weary bachelor (Ciaran Hinds). The dialogue is whip smart, but former TV director Bharat Nalluri tends to move the action along at the pace of a Merchant Ivory drama. Ultimately, though, it's the sterling performances that win the day.
