This comedy drama reunites Ben Affleck with his Chasing Amy director Kevin Smith, and sees indie icon Smith going mainstream and tough guy Affleck going mawkish. But the result, if slushy, isn't as bad as that might sound. In fact, this contains Affleck's best performance in recent years. He plays a tough New York PR man who is literally left holding the baby when his wife (Jennifer Lopez) dies in childbirth. Struggling to balance being a single dad with his career, Affleck flips out, loses his job and has to move in with his sage-like father (George Carlin) in New Jersey, where he begins the serious business of parenting. This bit of fluff may not appeal to fans of Smith or Affleck's previous work, but it could just win a new audience for both of them - and the presence of Liv Tyler as Affleck's new love and a cool cameo from a certain Hollywood superstar won't hurt.
