What could have been a cynical retread of old ground -
puts a feline spin on Mark Twain's
The Prince and the Pauper
- is actually an improvement on the first film. Garfield (again voiced by Bill Murray) stows away on a trip to London in his owner Jon's luggage and finds himself mistaken for an upper-class English cat (Prince, voiced by Tim Curry), who has been bequeathed an estate. (The humans in the story are pretty much incidental, with the exception of Billy Connolly as a dastardly relation trying to swindle Prince out of his inheritance.) A number of clever sight gags (including a variation on the Groucho/Harpo mirror sequence in
), some well-used locations and a strong voice cast compensate for a few too many cheap laughs. But if you liked the rather juvenile humour of Jim Davis's original cartoon, there's plenty here to keep you and your little ones entertained.
The lazy moggy stows away in his owner's luggage and ends up in London. He is promptly mistaken for an English upper-class cat, who has recently inherited a grand estate, and moves into his stately home - much to the dismay of the real aristocratic feline's conniving relation, who is bent on swindling him out of his money. Family comedy, starring Breckin Meyer, Billy Connolly and Jennifer Love Hewitt, with the voices of Bill Murray and Tim Curry.
