Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Our Score
Notwithstanding its superstar backstage credentials, this Oscar-winning portmanteau only occasionally delivers on the screen. In spite of story credits for Alberto Moravia, screenwriting nods for playwright Eduardo De Filippo and neorealist guru Cesare Zavattini and the directorial elegance of Vittorio De Sica, only the first tale Adelina, about Neapolitan husband-and-wife smugglers who exploit a law forbidding the arrest of pregnant women, is consistently amusing. Set in Milan, Anna again teams Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni in a tale about materialism, while in Mara, a Roman prostitute ends a week-long vow of chastity with a striptease that was to garner all the film's headlines.
