Death Proof

Death Proof

Quentin Tarantino (2007)

18 Certificate

Our Score
Writer/director Quentin Tarantino pays tribute to 1970s exploitation cinema with this stylistically authentic, though overly talky, twist on the psycho-killer tale. Originally released in the US as part of the Grindhouse double bill alongside Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror, it fuses the slasher and chase genres with mixed success. Plotwise, there's scarcely enough material to cover the newly extended running time, with two sets of female friends falling victim to the murderous stalker Stuntman Mike (a superb Kurt Russell), whose weapon of choice is his specially reinforced - and hence "death proof" - car. Extensive stretches of Tarantino's trademark, smart-mouthed dialogue clumsily plug the gaps and slow the pace, frequently sounding unnatural and clearly emphasising the talents of the second group of actresses (particularly Rosario Dawson and real-life stuntwoman Zoƫ Bell, here playing herself) over the first. Where the feature does excel is in its tense chase sequences - notably the climactic showdown between predator and prey.

A psychopathic stalker uses his specially modified car to hunt down and kill women. Several months after targeting a cluster of victims in Texas, the driver resurfaces in Tennessee, where he sets his sights on a group of female friends. However, the headstrong girls turn the tables on the murderer. Quentin Tarantino's thriller, starring Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson, Zoe Bell and Rose McGowan.
