Four convicts break out of jail and go on the rampage in a quiet town called Paradise, killing the sheriff and taking a woman hostage. Former gunfighter Audie Murphy is asked to gather a posse which heads off in pursuit. Not content with being a simple shoot-'em-up, this erratic western pitches itself as a deeply moral parable about the value of society and the nature of violence. This means that the action frequently grinds to a halt while Murphy squints his eyes, searches the horizon and disgorges nuggets of scripted wisdom.

Bandits invade a frontier town, rob the bank, kill the sheriff and kidnap a local woman. A tough gunslinger who was a friend of the dead lawman takes on the job of bringing them to justice, but the only one of the townspeople willing to help is a naive banker determined to prove his worth. Western, starring Audie Murphy, John Saxon, Vic Morrow and Lee Van Cleef.
