This Tom Cruise blockbuster was a box-office flop in the US after a bumpy gestation, with multiple star pairings attached, too many writers for the Writers Guild of America to comfortably log and a delayed release date. It's at best a perfectly serviceable confection, a caper movie in the North by Northwest mould, except it's pumped up with state-of-the-art effects and maximum racket. Cruise plays mysterious "rogue agent" Roy Miller who embroils ditzy Wichita mechanic June Havens (Cameron Diaz) in a jet-setting espionage adventure. They meet at the airport and Havens accidentally ends up in danger on his plane. When the going gets rough, Miller has a habit of drugging Havens (a recurring, if troubling, gag). Despite big set pieces - mainly chases by road, air and rail - ably handled by director James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) and fabulous locations, the film goes in one side of the brain and out the other, leaving little trace. The expected chemistry between the two good-looking leads also never really comes alight. Unlike all the vehicles exploding around them.
Plot Summary
Action adventure starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. A chance encounter at an airport with spy Roy Miller embroils mechanic June Havens in a frantic and life-threatening chase across the globe. But can June really trust this man of mystery, especially given his penchant for rendering her unconscious when trouble rears its head?
