Featuring a steely Bruce Willis on a machine gun-packing revenge mission and a head-spinning time-travel storyline, this fast-paced, gritty sci-fi thriller will satisfy not only those in search of popcorn thrills, but also those looking for an intelligent genre movie that poses smart, subtle questions about destiny and identity. Set in 2044, it stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Joe, a low-grade hitman charged with killing and disposing of mob targets sent back through time from 30 years in the future. But when his older self (Willis) appears, and promptly escapes, Joe has to find and kill himself before the mob does. It sounds complex - and it is - but director Rian Johnson keeps the action pumping as the young Joe gets on the trail of older Joe, who is stalking a shadowy figure called The Rainmaker. Emily Blunt provides feisty love interest as the farm girl who takes pity on the young Joe, but it's Willis and Gordon-Levitt who sell the mind and muscle of an ingenious, witty film that simply brims with ideas and energy.
