Run Wild, Run Free

Run Wild, Run Free

Richard C Sarafian (1969)

U Certificate

Our Score
Adapted by David Rook from his novel The White Colt, this rural fable owes much to cinematographer Wilkie Cooper's earthy evocation of the wild beauty of Dartmoor. Complete with a tense finale and directed with old-fashioned care by Richard C Sarafian, the story of the timid boy whose love of a free-spirited horse brings him out of his shell should appeal to more discriminating youngsters. Fresh from his success in Oliver!, Mark Lester has few problems looking vulnerable, while John Mills provides seasoned support as the retired colonel who provides the affection denied by parents Sylvia Syms and Gordon Jackson.

Withdrawn, mute 10-year-old Philip is ignored by his parents and goes off to explore Dartmoor alone, where he meets a retired colonel who shares his knowledge of Devon's wildlife. Under the older man's nurturing tutelage, the boy begins to tame a wild white colt, but fate proffers a series of setbacks just as real progress is being made. Children's drama, starring John Mills, Mark Lester, Sylvia Syms and Bernard Miles.
