Review

Our Score
Moscow is the setting for this Hollywood alien-invasion yarn from director Chris Gorak. Following in the wake of such noughties nightmares as War of the Worlds and Cloverfield, Gorak's sci-fi thriller tracks software entrepreneurs Emile Hirsch and Max Minghella as they hide out with tourists Olivia Thirlby and Rachael Taylor after invisible beasties with a ruthless line in molecular disintegration lay waste to planet Earth. Initially, the film is a self-contained affair (like the director's claustrophobic debut chiller Right at Your Door), as the survivors shelter in a cellar for a few days. But then things get predictable after they venture out into a deserted, devastated Russian capital (the movie's most effective scenes) and try to avoid the lethal visitors, while trying to figure out how to fight back. Although efficiently made, the movie is burdened with a perfunctory script and sadly lacks the stylish imagination that co-producer Timur Bekmambetov brought to his supernatural epics Night Watch and Day Watch.
