Our Score
Eminem's loosely autobiographical 8 Mile may have been the template, but as a vehicle for hip-hop superstar Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, this runs out of gas a fair few kilometres short. Although the story is partly based on his life, it's virtually indistinguishable from the cliché-ridden straight-to-video gangsta thrillers that proliferated in the early 2000s. The best bits come in the opening sequences, where Marc John Jefferies impresses playing the 50 Cent character as a child. Then the man himself takes centre stage and this slides into the now overly familiar story of a young man from the 'hood torn between becoming a rapper or enjoying the easy life as a drug dealer. Irish director Jim Sheridan does his best, giving the film a suitably gritty sheen, but 50 Cent is so lacking in charisma that ultimately you're left feeling short-changed.

Summary

An inner-city drug dealer puts his life of crime behind him after a near-fatal shooting to pursue a new career as a rap artist. Unfortunately, when he performs songs inspired by his shady past, his former criminal associates do not take kindly to having their misdeeds immortalised in music. Drama, starring Curtis `50 Cent' Jackson, Terrence Howard and Ashley Walters.
