Robert de Niro is the headline act in this murky thriller, playing a blind man who says he can see dead people. But writer/director Rodrigo Cortés (Buried) keeps him largely in the background, and also squanders the talents of the other leads. Cillian Murphy has little to work with as a paranormal investigator and avowed sceptic whose mentor is Sigourney Weaver's professor. Murphy sets out to debunk De Niro's supernatural claims against the wishes of Weaver, a formidable character who is nonetheless reduced to a trembling wreck at the mere mention of the psychic's name. This mysterious reaction draws us into the story but, unfortunately, the more Murphy digs, the deeper we get into a hole where nothing makes sense. Cortes holds back information for a last-minute twist and uses cheap magic tricks to distract from the wobbly structure. There's very little in the way of suspense, and so the preposterous climax falls utterly flat.
