Trouble Brewing

Trouble Brewing

Anthony Kimmins (1939)

U Certificate

Our Score
One of the better George Formby vehicles has the Lancashire likely lad as a printer with a detective fixation, intent on capturing a gang of counterfeiters to impress fellow journo Googie Withers. It hardly takes Sherlock Holmes to figure out who is the master criminal, but the red herrings that pad out the story are amusing, with the notable exception of a bout against a bruiser that was old hat when Chaplin and Stan Laurel fell back on it. Anthony Kimmins keeps the action brisk, but like all Formby directors he makes a stilted hash of the saucy songs.

A newspaper compositor is paid in counterfeit notes when he wins a large sum of money at the races and turns detective to tracks down the gang of criminals responsible. Comedy, starring George Formby, Googie Withers and Gus McNaughton.
