Richard Attenborough (1978)

Our Score
This low-key update of the old "ventriloquist taken over by his evil dummy" theme is scripted by William Goldman from his own novel. Richard Attenborough overstretches an already thin premise and deliberately minimises the horror elements by placing the emphasis on warped entertainer Anthony Hopkins's unbalanced psychological condition. The result is a sadly sentimental effort, lacking both suspense and atmosphere. Alberto Cavalcanti's similar Dead of Night episode did it rather better in 1945, and in less time as well.

An unstable ventriloquist falls under the influence of his dummy. Seeking solace in a remote resort run by an old flame, he finds his feelings for her returning - and his mental state deteriorating. Richard Attenborough's psychological horror based on William Goldman's novel, starring Anthony Hopkins, Ann-Margret and Burgess Meredith.
