The Naked Spur

The Naked Spur

Anthony Mann (1953)

PG Certificate

Our Score
In the third of the great collaborations between James Stewart and director Anthony Mann, Stewart is on ferocious form as a neurotic bounty hunter on the trail of charismatic murderer Robert Ryan, hoping to make enough money to buy a ranch in California, but threatened by obsession and madness. A tough, melodramatic western, it aspires to Greek or Shakespearean tragedy - against the truly Olympian Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the characters look suitably puny and pitiful, the playthings of the Gods. Janet Leigh, however, looks gorgeous - straight from the soda fountains of 1950s America - as Ryan's girl.

An embittered bounty hunter spends weeks on the trail of an elusive outlaw in the hope of claiming the $5,000 reward on his head. However, he makes the mistake of enlisting two dubious acquaintances to help him - an error of judgement that threatens to cost him more than just the money. Anthony Mann's Western, starring James Stewart, Robert Ryan, Ralph Meeker, Millard Mitchell and Janet Leigh.
