Our Score
A faded British pop musician takes refuge in his dreams in this melancholy but strange relationship fantasy from Jake Paltrow (brother of Gwyneth). Gary (Martin Freeman) is a New York-based jingle writer whose career is floundering while his smug best friend Paul (Simon Pegg) thrives, and his girlfriend (Gwyneth Paltrow) grows bored. Rather than face the realities of his life, Gary becomes obsessed with a beautiful woman (Penélope Cruz) he meets in his sleep. How can he get to spend even more time with her? The presence of Cruz as the idealised mate will inevitably evoke comparisons with Vanilla Sky. But while Paltrow's debut feature lacks originality and spark, it does make interesting use of its unlikely ensemble - casting Danny DeVito as a new-age guru and showing a previously unseen dark side to the usually likeable Pegg.

Summary

A former pop musician is reduced to writing jingles, while his girlfriend becomes bored with him, and his smug best friend has an unfair abundance of good luck. In an attempt to deal with his dull life, he constructs a dream world where he regularly meets a beautiful mystery woman, but his obsession with the imaginary figure has shocking results. Romantic comedy, with Martin Freeman, Penelope Cruz and Gwyneth Paltrow.
