Review

Our Score
The belated feature debut of John Wells, who made his name in TV with ER and The West Wing, The Company Men ought to have been a big deal on release in 2011. A film for our times, it deals with the harsh realities of life at the sharp end of the recession, with Ben Affleck and Chris Cooper as white-collar execs forced to readjust when they are downsized by a global corporation (CEO: Craig T Nelson, deputy Tommy Lee Jones). While Cooper keeps up appearances for the neighbours, Affleck retrains as a manual labourer with brother-in-law Kevin Costner. An unbelievably sad and moving story about masculinity, it proved as toxic at the box office as a subprime mortgage.

Summary

A corporation enters serious financial difficulties and thousands of employees find themselves out of a job. A successful salesman resists offers of help from his house-building brother-in-law, while two veteran executives find the business world has changed drastically since they were last looking for work. Drama, starring Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones and Kevin Costner.
