Our Score
The beautiful and witty Jean Simmons is the only reason to watch this dreadful, Swinging Sixties effort. Simmons plays a bored housewife from the stockbroker belt who takes the train to London and is hounded by a young dropout, played by Zeffirelli's Romeo, Leonard Whiting. He wants to seduce her and pursues her across London to her mother's house; amazingly, the mother says "go on dear, have a fling". This is Brief Encounter in the style of Blow-Up, taking a tourist's-eye view of London before settling down to its chaste sex scene and Antonioni-esque finale of cold alienation. Needless to say, the characters have no names. Very trendy, that.
