After being raised in captivity by a man who taught her to fear the outside world, a young woman sees her new freedom shattered by a series of disturbing events. Fantasy horror, starring Liv Tyler, Bel Powley and Brad Dourif
In this spooky thriller, a police officer (Liv Tyler) takes in Anna (Bel Powley), who's been kept isolated in the woods for 16 years, only to discover a terrifying secret about the teenager. The film starts with a gritty, interesting premise, suggesting something deeper beneath the supernatural elements. Once Anna's true nature is revealed, however, matters descend into straightforward horror tropes that don't take advantage of the first act's potential. There's also a number of jumps in tone and logic that become harder to accept as the film proceeds. Powley is a terrific lead, continually carrying a foreboding aura about her, although Tyler struggles against the occasionally stiff dialogue as her concerned carer. As a late-night scary movie, Wildling has enough to hold the attention for 90 minutes and is entertaining for the most part. However, inconsistencies in the storytelling prevent the film from being anything other than ordinary.
