A young couple desperately search for happiness as their strikingly different backgrounds and polar-opposite families begin to strain their fledgling romance. Romantic comedy.
In this romantic comedy from Ate De Jong (Drop Dead Fred) and Emily Harris, Johnny Flynn and Lydia Wilson play a couple from very different backgrounds overcoming various issues (not least their families) as they try to stay together. The film overall has a very sweet tone, and it's bolstered by the very natural chemistry between the two charming leads, who capture nicely what it is to be maddeningly in love. However, the Romeo and Juliet story is nothing new, particularly when the conflicts feel so superficial. Just as we begin to touch on something deeper, the film flinches. Nevertheless, there are moments of hilarity to be found, particularly from a classy supporting class that includes Juliet Stevenson and Henry Goodman, who are on top form as Vida's parents. Sharp camera work and a dreamy soundtrack are a pleasant canvas for an otherwise unremarkable film that feels a lot, but says too little.
