Our Score
This 2009 film from Iranian writer/director Asghar Farhadi is an arresting combination of high-tension domestic nightmare and thought-provoking moral debate, and received a belated but no less welcome release off the back of international acclaim for Farhadi's 2011 Oscar winner Nader and Simin, a Separation. Farhadi underlines his facility for creating sustained intrigue in the story of an upscale Tehran couple who invite their young daughter's teacher, Elly (Taraneh Alidoosti), to join them and a group of friends on a weekend by the sea. However, little do they know what turmoil will erupt because of assumptions about Elly's marital availability. This is, after all, an Islamic state with a strict moral environment. But what's fascinating about the unfolding crisis here is that Farhadi never questions Islamic law itself - he puts the spotlight on the errors of judgement that individuals make when dealing with such sensitive issues.
