Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Fact and fiction blur to spectacular effect in this showcase for the sport of base jumping and wingsuit-flying. Alexander Polli, real-life superstar of the gravity-defying sport, plays JC, an adrenaline junkie self-absorbed by his addiction to leaping off cliffs, mountains and tall buildings in exotic climes, breathtakingly documented by the GoPro cameras strapped to his body. However, his thrill-seeking obsession and playboy lifestyle abruptly take a backseat when he falls for the girlfriend of a fellow flyer (Carlos Briceño Schutte). Sounds like the stuff of old Hollywood flicks like Trapeze or The Gypsy Moths, but the electrifying footage ensures the drama isn't mired in love-triangle slushiness. The wingsuit swoop past Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro is an utter heart-stopper all on its own, never mind dizzying 100mph plunges through forest ravines and alpine mountain ranges where one tiny error means instant death. Despite not being a professional actor, Polli convinces as the live-in-the-moment JC, which only makes it even more poignant that he was killed in 2016 while performing another perilous stunt in France.
