Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Rebellious teenagers escape their humdrum home town to search for thrills at a music festival, frantically pursued by disapproving parents, in this cliché-riddled comedy drama. Edward Bluemel heads the cast as Heath, a sensitive aspiring musician who is struggling to tame wild child Mia (Ella Purnell), while also hoping to connect with his reclusive rock star idol, a man who hasn't been seen in public for 12 years. Both leads have comic foil best pals along for the ride (Jordan Stephens of hip-hop duo Rizzle Kicks has all the best scenes), with Phil Daniels and Nigel Lindsay as older generation objects of ridicule. Although director Bryn Higgins deftly captures the colour and chaos of a typical 21st-century festival - including the live music augmented by all manner of circus acts and oddball punters - the plot and characterisations are decidedly old-fashioned. This amounts to little more than rites-of-passage hokum peppered with sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll in an all-too-predictable narrative.
