Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

With a dwindling reputation and rising financial responsibilities, Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) draws on Victorian London and his own painful past to write his most famous novel. There have been countless film adaptations of A Christmas Carol, but this comedy drama unearths the creation of the beloved festive story. We get a fascinating insight into Dickens himself, particularly his fear of poverty. Rather than a dry biopic, it's a comic fantasy of sorts, as Dickens interacts with Scrooge (a perfectly cast Christopher Plummer) and other characters who help him finish his story. It may be a little bit liberal with the facts, but this never pretends to be a documentary. Instead, it's a film that captures the spirit of the story it explores - why we love this tale so much, and the impact it had on the way we view the festive season. Funny and heart-warming, this is a fresh take on a classic.
