Our Score
Despite being the first film in Welsh to receive an Oscar nomination, Paul Turner's biopic has a typically British period polish. Yet it also has a commitment to language and a pride in national culture that is both unfashionable and refreshing. Huw Garmon gives a respectful performance as Ellis Evans, the teenage poet who wrote under the name of "Hedd Wyn" before dying in the First World War. It's the war scenes, though, that give the film a power and poignancy to rival that of the trench poem Yr Arwr (The Hero) which posthumously won Evans the Chair at the National Eisteddfod, a prize he'd always coveted.

Summary

I nodi 100 mlynedd ers marwolaeth y bardd ar 31 Gorffennaf 1917, cyfle arall i weld y ffilm a enwebwyd am Oscar gyda Huw Garmon yn y brif ran. Barddoniaeth oedd angerdd mawr bywyd Ellis Evans, a'i brif uchelgais oedd ennill cadair yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol. Llwyddodd i wneud hynny yn Eisteddfod Penbedw 1917. Yn anffodus, ni ddaeth i wybod am ei lwyddiant; roedd e'n ymladd yn erbyn yr Almaenwyr yn Ypres a bu farw ar ei ddiwrnod cyntaf ar y Ffrynt Gorllewinol. Dyma stori Ellis Evans, un o feirdd enwocaf Cymru. Biopic of poet Ellis Evans, also known as Hedd Wyn, who dreamed of being chaired at a National Eisteddfod - but didn't live to see his eventual success in 1917, after he died fighting in The First World War. Starring Huw Garmon, Catrin Fychan, Ceri Cunnington and Llio Silyn.
