Our Score
Expanding upon his own short Sari & Trainers, director Jeremy Wooding makes a shaky feature debut with this unpersuasive mix of Bollywood masala and backstreet realism. Essentially a Romeo-and-Juliet story with a dash of culture-clash controversy tossed in for good measure, the romance between East End Indian Preeya Kalidas and country boy James McAvoy feels as contrived as the song-and-dance routines, which rarely develop organically from the action and are staged without much trace of the stylised exuberance that makes Bollywood musicals so unique. Moreover, the film lacks authenticity, despite the abundance of racial, social and generational flashpoints.

An Indian woman falls for a visiting Englishman, but is forced to keep the blossoming relationship a secret from her strict family. When her relatives discover she is planning to move to Britain with her new love they vow to stop her, prompting a chaotic chase across the world. Romantic musical comedy, starring Preeya Kalidas and James McAvoy.
